Captain’s Column: January 2025
Wishing all members a joyful start to 2025 and an early Happy Lunar New Year!
As we step into 2025, let’s carry forward the memorable swings, shared laughter, and strong bonds forged on our greens last year. Despite the ongoing course renovations, the Club remains committed to its initiatives. This January, I’m delighted to share updates on our course renovation, Junior Golf Development program, and key club news you won’t want to miss.
#1 Building the Greens of Tomorrow: Progress You Can See
First and foremost, I extend my gratitude to our golfing members for your patience and understanding during the transition to 9-hole golfing operations in December 2024 to facilitate the renovation. Your feedback, particularly on making the 9-hole course more engaging—especially on Hole 1—has been invaluable. Rest assured, we are actively exploring enhancements to improve your experience during this period.
Much of the initial renovation work has quietly progressed behind the scenes, laying a solid foundation for the course transformation. Key efforts completed include:
- Turf Removal: Transferring Zoysia turf from the Back 9 to a temporary nursery and addressing areas on the Front 9 to maintain optimal playing conditions.
- Preliminary Works: Removing all accessories from the Back 9, including pins, cups, and stakes, in preparation for renovation.
- Application of Herbicide: Initiating the process of preparing the turf for renovation by applying herbicide to kill the remaining grass.
As January unfolds, renovation activities will become increasingly visible, marked by steps such as the installation of hoardings and the removal of selected trees. The scale and pace of work are set to accelerate as we approach the Lunar New Year, reflecting steady progress in our journey to rejuvenate our golf course.
While adapting to 9-hole operations, I’d like to remind all members to maintain a good pace of play and avoid slow play to ensure an enjoyable experience for everyone. Let’s stay mindful and considerate of our fellow golfers especially when playing the 2nd round of 9.
#2 Fostering Friendships on the Fairways: Junior Golf Highlights
In November, our junior teams from Sembawang Country Club (SCC) and Singapore Island Country Club (SICC) came together for a friendly match at SICC’s Bukit Course. Although the game was unfortunately canceled due to inclement weather, the young golfers made the most of the opportunity to connect and build friendships through their passion for the sport. This camaraderie set the stage for a reciprocal event in December, where we hosted the SICC team on our home course.
Looking ahead to 2025, we are dedicated to further developing our Junior Golf Program. Beyond official competitions, our junior team will organise more friendly matches with other clubs. These events aim to give our juniors valuable exposure to different courses while fostering camaraderie and mutual learning among junior golfers across Singapore.
We deeply appreciate the support of everyone involved in the junior program. This year, we are excited to expand the team and welcome aspiring junior golfers. Selection trials will be held on 08 February 2025, and we encourage all interested members to participate.
Stay tuned for updates as we continue nurturing the next generation of SCC golfers and building a strong foundation for junior golf excellence.
#3 Vouchers, Fa Cai Festivities and Safety First!
Here are some key initiatives and reminders to enhance your club experience:
- Member Vouchers: As a token of appreciation for your continued support during the renovation, all principal members are entitled to a one-time collection of vouchers from the clubhouse reception and concierge. Collection is available daily from 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM since 16 December 2024. These vouchers can be used at participating F&B outlets and retail shops within SCC. Don’t miss this opportunity to enjoy exclusive perks!
- Fa Cai Golf Event: Festive Golf will continue amidst the renovations, starting with the Fa Cai Golf Event on 8 February 2025. The event includes a traditional Lion Dance celebration at 1:30 PM to usher in the Lunar New Year. To ensure inclusivity and greater participation, the event will be played over 9 holes, allowing more members to join the festivities. This initiative supports our goal of maintaining community spirit and cohesion, especially as many members explore alternative golfing options during renovations.
- Safety Reminder: We take your safety seriously and appreciate your feedback regarding past cobra sightings at Hole 3. If you encounter a snake, please call the emergency immediately instead of using the WhatsApp feedback channel. This ensures a swift response, allowing marshals to identify the snake and its net promptly. ACRES will then be activated to relocate the cobra safely.
Looking Ahead
As we continue operating with 9 holes and prepare to unveil the new course layout, your feedback is invaluable to us. We welcome suggestions on how we can further enhance your club experience.
I wish all members and their families a year filled with good health, happiness, and memorable moments during this transformative chapter. To my fellow golfers, may your drives be straighter, your putts flawless, and your scorecards filled with birdies.
Here’s to a fantastic 2025 on and off the course!
Warm regards,
Wee Tiong, Club Captain
