Captain’s Column – Oct 2026

Fellow Members,

As we progress into the last quarter of the year, I would like to provide a comprehensive update on several key matters relating to our membership framework, operational enhancements, course care expectations, and the principles guiding our daily course set‑up. These updates reflect the Club’s continued commitment to maintaining excellence in both service and course quality.

Membership & Fees Review

The General Committee has concluded a detailed review of our membership structures and fees to ensure that the Club continues to deliver high‑quality facilities, superior course conditions, and an exceptional golfing experience.

To sustain rising operational demands and support ongoing improvements, adjustments to golfing fees and subscription rates have been approved.

Key decisions include:

  • Revised golfing fees for members, guests, and visitors will take effect upon the reopening of our redeveloped golf course.

  • Updated monthly subscription fees will commence on 01 January 2027, with the intention to maintain this subscription framework for the subsequent five years to provide financial stability and predictability for all members.

  • A Member Appreciation Package will be introduced, granting five complimentary golf games to Continuing and Restricted Principal Members for use on the newly redeveloped course.

  • Members in the SAF Restricted and CIV Restricted categories will be offered a one‑time opportunity to convert to their corresponding standard Continuing membership category without retrospective subscription adjustments. Members who prefer to remain in their current categories may do so under the revised subscription rates.

These decisions were made following extensive deliberation to balance immediate member interests with the long‑term sustainability of our facilities and operations.

Update on Priority Booking System

The Club acknowledges ongoing feedback regarding tee-time availability and wishes to reaffirm that members will continue to receive strict booking priority.

The Club will continue to monitor the booking process and tee-time utilisation to ensure that the system remains fair and effective for members. Any changes to the booking process will be communicated to members in advance.

Course Care & Stewardship

Maintaining a championship‑ready golf course requires collective responsibility. While our maintenance team works diligently each day, every golfer plays an important role in preserving course quality.

Members and guests are reminded to observe the following:

Pitch Marks & Divots

Repair pitch marks on greens and fill fairway divots using the sand bottles provided.

Bunkers

Rake bunkers thoroughly after use and place rakes correctly inside the bunker.

Reporting Issues

Notify marshals or the Golf Operations team if you encounter weed infestation, ground hazards, or other maintenance concerns.

Tee Box Divots

Sand is not provided on tee boxes for divot repair. Our maintenance team conducts daily divot repairs to ensure teeing surfaces remain level and consistent.

Your cooperation ensures optimal playing conditions for all who follow.

Course Set-Up, Markings & Playing Philosophy

To enhance clarity and understanding among members, the following outlines the principles and considerations guiding the Club’s daily course set‑up and the application of course markings.

Course Set-Up in Accordance with the Rules of Golf

The course is prepared in alignment with the Rules of Golf, with markings and Local Rules applied where necessary to define how specific areas should be played. These measures ensure fairness, consistency, and safety.

Playing the Course as Presented

The Club’s guiding philosophy is that golfers should play the course as they find it. Course conditions may vary due to maintenance requirements, weather, safety considerations, and operational needs. This approach preserves the integrity of the game while ensuring the course remains safe and enjoyable.

Out of Bounds (OB) Lines Along Toronto Road

Due to ongoing road works at Toronto Road, OB boundaries have been established and reinforced along adjacent holes.

These boundaries serve two primary purposes:

  • Safety: Once the road becomes operational, traffic will be closer to the course. OB lines prevent golfers from playing shots toward the road.
  • Behavioural Familiarisation: Establishing these boundaries early helps golfers adapt to the expected playing behaviour before road works are completed.

Ground Under Repair (GUR)

Areas designated as GUR are clearly marked, typically with white lines and/or blue stakes for larger zones.

Players may:

  • Play the ball as it lies, or
  • Take free relief under Rule 16.1.

No Play Zones (NPZ)

Where an area is marked as a No Play Zone, golfers are not permitted to play the ball as it lies. Relief is mandatory.

Clear signage and markings are essential to ensure golfers understand when NPZ rules apply.

Overall Course Philosophy

The Club’s objective is to present a course that is:

  • Fair,
  • Safe,
  • Clearly defined, and
  • Consistent with the Rules of Golf and Local Rules in force on the day.

This ensures a high‑quality playing experience while maintaining the highest standards of safety and course integrity.

Thank you for your continued support and dedication to Sembawang Country Club. I look forward to meeting you on the fairways in the weeks ahead.

Warm Regards,

Kenneth Gn, Club Captain
